Remember that clever Dell commercial that was set in a candy factory while the factory workers sang lollipop? It still makes me smile! Well our very own Josh Dalismer just finished shooting the European and Asian ads for this campaign with the agency, Mother here in New York. I sat down with him recently to find out exactly how he executed these very creative ads.
How did the concept come along?
The art directors at Mother gave me a quick sketch on a sheet of copy paper. As soon as I saw the drawings I knew it was a great idea.
And for retouching, how much did you handle yourself?
I was involved in every aspect of the production, from model making to the post production. I worked along side the guys at Gloss Post Production going over every detail. We had close to twenty images to work with a quick turn around so a small team was required to get it done on time.
Were you allowed a lot of creative input?
Yes I was. The guys at Mother knew what they wanted but gave me room to help shape their ideas. It was a group effort from start to finish.
How much was done in post production and how much in camera?
Almost all was done in camera however the gum ball machine had to be shot in different pieces to get the light how we wanted. We did not have enough mini computers to fill it up so we used black foam rubber to take up some volume in the dome. So basically these were created with old techniques and new digital capabilities.
Thanks Josh! Here are the ads below. It is amazing to see how the concept came about and how it all came together.
And here is a billboard that went up in Denmark.
