I am just coming down after taking part in this event at the end of last week, October 28 - 30.
NYC Foto Works is in it's third year and when I got introduced to it I felt it was really solid and I wanted to become involved right away. I reviewed both Thursday and Friday, and I am glad I did because I had a really good experience.
The event was held at Sandbox Studios, conveniently located in Tribeca/Soho, just 5 minutes from my office. The set up was basically a bunch of people sitting at tables with name tags, and another bunch of people, photographers, milling around outside holding portfolios and iPad cases.
I saw about 8 people or so per session, 15 minutes per person. I would start out by asking what specifically the photographer wanted from me - maybe just a chance to show the work, or to address a certain issue like flow, edit or, like in one instance, advice on bidding on future jobs.
The time either flew away or dragged on depending on how much there was to say about the work. Mostly there was a lot to say about the work, and I found myself feeling like a stand up act, having to think very quickly on my feet, since I really wanted the photographer to take something away from the meeting. I really enjoyed this process a lot, unlike other portfolio reviews I have done. I think it is beacuse the level of work was high, and somehow there was a genuine atmosphere of sharing at the event. We were all excited to be there I think.
Here are some of the photographers that I enjoyed meeting.
Carolyn Fong http://www.carolynfongphotography.com
Carolyn has a book of portraits that was nice. We talked about editing and making good choices for the optimum picture flow.
Zach Gross http://zachgross.com
Beautiful mostly black and white work, very lyrical and a great presentation.
Allison Michael Orenstein http://www.allisonmichaelorenstein.com/
One of my favorite portfolios at the event, hands down.
Christel Bangsgaard http://christelb.com/
This portfolio blew me away. Beauty is not usually my category, but I loved it.
